about
I wrote lyrics for this, jokingly, in the form of a four movement mini opera, for a skirmish that took place while I was at work. I had no intention of actually coming back to it. But a couple of weeks later, I did - I sketched out music for the different sections and mumbled it into my phone. I'd hoped to at least do an acoustic demo before the end of February, but that didn't happen. Finally last week, I started working on it again.
Having let it ferment for that long, I had many more ideas for it than before, so I decided that it had to be the full bore mini power-pop opera it wanted to be. So here it is.
lyrics
Part 1 - The Setup
Time is spinning by
I'm not winning, I'm just spinning
nothing to grab on to
no flat spot to land
no refuge when things get out of hand
Time is beating me
defeating me, repeating
nothing makes it slow down
it's like I'm not even there
no feeling like we're getting anywhere
I feel like there's a countdown
but I don't know what we're counting down to
something's going to happen
wait long enough and something's bound to
but noone's let me in on
what happens when we hit one
then zero
Part 2 - A Swing And A Miss
She's hurrying
running late again
she's worrying
Gotta catch the bus at ten
and as the door begins to close, she catches hold
on the only open bench she sits alone
and feels alone
He's hurrying
always feels behind
the day is blurrying
he should have been at work at nine
and has he reaches for the door, she darts in front
as the bus pulls away, he stands alone
and feels alone
Part 3 - The Odds
One seat, two people
who need each other
what were the odds
they'd wind up next to each other
in the only seat available
on the morning bus
good, but not good enough
good, but not good enough
One seat, two people
could help each other
what were the odds
that they'd be thrown together
by accidental circumstance
on the morning bus
good, but not good enough
good, but not good enough
Part 4 - The Setup Again
Time is whipping past
I'm not gripping, I'm just slipping
noone sees me go by
it all happens so quick
no way of knowing where I'll finally stick
I feel like there's a countdown
but I don't know what we're counting down to
something's going to happen
wait long enough and something's bound to
but noone's let me in on
what happens when we hit one
then zero
